A few simple tips that teach you how to treat insomnia naturally

How to treat insomnia naturally? This is indeed a serious question the answer of which is unknown to many people.Indeed, Insomnia, or sleeplessness, can hit any person anytime. You may have sleeping difficulties at home or while on vacation. And without your knowledge you suddenly start tossing and turning at bed, sleep eluding you like a distant mirage.Instead of the usual six or seven hours at night, you realise that you are barely managing three or four hours of sleep. You are perplexed, not knowing what to do. If you have sleeping pills, you go for it. Or you may drink a glass of wine and fall asleep promptly only to wake up after a couple of hours.Surely, most of us have the occasional bout of disturbed sleep and then return to normal a few nights later. However, insomnia is a chronic problem that grips a large chunk of the human population every year.

Sleep experts in USA have developed a nine step regimen for people who are unsure of how to treat insomnia naturally. It is based on the theory that by deliberately reducing time in bed and by modifying your waking activities, you will be able to treat insomnia. To some experts, insomnia is a 24-hour disorder and hence they include advice on daytime as well as bedtime behavior :

1) Keep a record of your sleep pattern for a week. Note the time you go to bed and when you get in the morning. Make a note of the the naps you take in between and of any medication or alcohol you take to induce sleep.

2)Go to bed only when it is time to retire. This means you are not allowed to read or watch TV in bed. If you normally get up at 7am, and your diary indicated that you average only five hours of sleep at night, don't get into bed until 2am. But you should spend at least 5 hours in bed. If you regularly manage only 4 hours of sleep , it means you need medical or professional help to cure your insomnia.

3) Increase your time in bed by 15-minute increments. The rule is : once you sleep 85 or 90 %of your time in bed for four consecutive days, you can retire 15 minutes earlier. But if you sleep less than 80 %, you must push your bedtime further back

4) Do something to keep from dozing off too early. If sleeps visits you too early, you might wake up at midnight. So keep yourself busy with physical activities that require little exertions. You may read your favorite novel, write letters or fiddle with your laptop, or books on even better, read books on how to treat insomnia naturally and get a good night's sleep.

5) Ask a friend or relative to help you stay awake during the first week.If you doze off early, ask your spouse or live-in partner to shake you up. If you are alone, you can splash some water in your eyes to stay awake. Even better if you make a telephone call to your friend or relative with whom you have made a prior arrangement.

6)Keep away from sleeping pills. This is really a tough proposition, especially for those who have been suffering from insomnia for the last 10 or 15 years.Under medical supervision, you can start the process of breaking free from sleeping pills. Your doctor will, at the outset, allow you to take medicine. But once you start sleeping for 5 hours every night, you will be advised to hit bed at 2 am at night, so that you can break off the habit of taking sleeping pills every night before going to bed.

7) Start each day by spending at least 20 minutes in the sun.Sunlight heralds the beginning of the day. It helps advance your natural body clock, telling you that it's daytime and hence you have to remain alert. You can raise the curtains and allow sunlight to pour in. You can have your breakfast in the lawn or in a sun-bathed room. You will surely feel the radiant energy charging your spirit. On rainy days, you can switch on very bright artificial light that acts as a good substitute for sunlight. You will be able to ward off your lethargy and depression and start your day with a new vigour.

8)Eat light breakfast and lunch to remain alert and active during daytime. Schedule dinner four to five hours before bedtime.Although heavy meal can temporarily induce drowsiness, it is not advisable to go to bed with a full stomach. You need time to digest the food before you go to sleep.

9) Exercise daily. If you have the habit of doing strenuous workouts, do so in the late afternoon to help release nervous energy brought on by the stresses of the day. But experts always recommend moderate exercise--- a leisurely stroll to the nearby park or a ride on the stationary bike--- about 2 hours before bedtime. Truly, being inactive and lazy is the worst thing an insomniac can do.

10) Meditation or yoga can be helpful. You can also think of doing some meditation or yoga before bedtime. This not only will help you concentrate your mind but also can bring about a calm in your mind which, in turn, can help you sleep better.

The above regimen may or may not work for you. In some cases, other disorders like sleep apnea, in which breathing stops and the person is jarred awake, or sleep myoclonus, in which involuntary muscle constriction causes twitching and other body movement----may turn out to be the cause of insomnia.Otherwise, if you follow the program religiously, for more than a year, you will surely get 7 hours of sound sleep in the night. Once in a while you may have sleep disturbances, but at least you would know that now you don't need to panic. Sooner or later, you will get to know how to treat insomnia naturally and have a good night's sleep. So, are you now ready to throw away your sleeping pills for good and get some sleep ?
